Obituary for Mary C Thomas (McCollum)

Mary C Thomas (McCollum)
Thomas,
Mary C., Beloved widow of Elmer Robert Thomas. Devoted mother of Cynthia Suzanne, Robert Paul, and Mark Steven Thomas and mother-in-law of Kathryn Sena Thomas. Loving grandmother of Wes, John, and Will Thomas. Devoted sister of sisters JoAnn (William) Clement and Charlotte McCollum (John, deceased) Wessels, brothers Thomas McCollum and the late Jack (Helen) McCollum, and aunt to many nieces and nephews. Passed Sunday October 21, 2012 at age 79. Resident of Loveland. Memorial service to be held on Friday, October 26, 2012, 11:00 AM, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 100 Miami Avenue, Terrace Park, Ohio 45174. Mary began teaching in 1954, and from 1966 to 1994, taught primarily in the Indian Hill School District. Wherever Mary taught, in urban or suburban settings, she had a standard of quiet excellence. Never one to draw attention to herself, Mary focused on the student. She loved to learn from classes, conferences, workshops, colleagues, parents, but most of all from her students. Her teaching approach was inventive. Always willing to alter routine, Mary empowered students by incorporating their ideas into the moment. Without fanfare, Mary changed teaching programs, including developing and teaching a pre-first grade class for students who need time to mature before entering the first grade. Many parents, teachers, and students are grateful Mary was a part of their education. She was a standard for all educators. Mary volunteered at the Cincinnati Art Museum Gift Shop, Children’s Hospital, Matthew 25 Ministries, and was avid about needlepoint. Mary also helped establish the Elmer and Mary Thomas Scholarship Fund For Choral Conducting at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Thomas Episcopal Church for Outreach and Children’s Ministries. Online condolences to schaeferbusbyfuneralhome.com.
